Charlie Vernon says Paul Grimley's departure as Armagh football manager didn't come as a surprise to any of the players.

The Pearse Og clubman's resignation was confirmed earlier this week amid speculation that his assistant Kieran McGeeney is poised to succeed him. Armagh's season came to an end last Saturday when they suffered a one-point All-Ireland SFC quarter-final loss to Donegal.

"Ah look, the way Paul had been talking about it, it was sort of no great surprise," the Armagh full back states in the Irish News.

"He had sort of hinted through the year at different times that he would step down. He didn't say to us he was leaving after the match on Saturday, but we sort of knew it was coming."

Vernon added: "The one thing about Paul, he's always been brutally honest, and he wants to do the best thing for Armagh football. He deserves a lot of credit."
