Paul Bealin's departure from Westmeath has opened the door for Luke Dempsey to return - possibly as U21 manager.

At last week's county board meeting, where delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of Bealin's removal as senior and U21 boss, chairman Sean Sheridan said he was open to having different managers over the two teams and the U21 job may well appeal to Dempsey, who is currently in charge of Kildare kingpins Moorefield.

Dempsey famously led the Lake County to All-Ireland minor and U21 titles in 1995 and '99 respectively before spending four years in the senior hot-seat.

When asked by the Westmeath Topic if he'd be interested in the U21 post, the Mullingar resident replied: "Of course and I'd have a particular interest in the U21 side.

"It's a competition that normally starts in February and ends in May, and there would be a lot of coaching involved. Certainly, it's something I'd consider."
