Prenty plays down timing of Mayo games

Mayo minors before the 2012 semi final clash with Meath at Croke Park.
Connacht Council secretary John Prenty feels that Mayo should be pleased to have two games in Croke Park the one day, despite the matches being four hours apart.

Mayo minors take to the field against Armagh in the All-Ireland MFC quarterfinal at 12pm, while the senior side do battle with Cork at 4pm.

Sandwiched in between those two games is the meeting of Kerry and Galway at 2pm meaning that Mayo supporters have no option but to stay for all three games.

It means a long day for the travelling supporters, but Prenty states to the Mayo News that there was no way around the fixtures.

"The original fixture was to have the quarterfinals at 2pm and 4pm in Croke Park with the four minor games on the Monday," said Prenty.

"It then transpired when Armagh lost, Monday is not a Bank Holiday in the North, so it was decided to put a triple header into Croke Park.

"But once Mayo won the Connacht Championship, they were always going to be the main (4pm) match in Croke Park this weekend, having been beaten in an All-Ireland final last year. It's only a bonus to Mayo people that they're getting two games."
