Anthony Cunningham intends staying on as Galway hurling manager, despite another disappointing season at the helm.

Last night's All-Ireland qualifier loss to Tipperary marked the end of Cunningham's third term as manager, and his position will now be reviewed by the county board. In his first season in charge, the Tribesmen won an historic Leinster SHC title and came within a whisker of adding the Liam MacCarthy, but the last two have proven to be hugely frustrating.

The St. Thomas' man was in upbeat mood after the 4-13 to 3-25 defeat in Semple Stadium, insisting that Galway are 'thriving'.

"The performance was there, they're thriving really. In particular we had five or six new players this year who hadn't played championship before," he said.

"We're in a building process, happy with that though not happy with the result - we were very, very close."
