Kerry will be "looking for more" funding

Kerry County Board will be seeking additional funding in the future after seeing neighbours Cork get a massive dig-out with the redevelopment of Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

As part of its latest round of sports capital funding, the Government yesterday announced a grant of €300,000 in funding to the Kingdom to assist the development of its Centre of Excellence. Kerry had sought €500k.

But the figures pale into insignificance compared to the Government's sanctioning of a €30m grant to help fund Cork GAA's ambitious €70m regeneration of their flagship stadium.

"We are delighted with this grant," Kerry chairman Patrick O'Sullivan tells The Irish Examiner. "We are hoping to commence the construction of our centre of excellence next month and this funding is another step along the road.

"We are pleased with our allocation, but when you see the amount that was recently given to Cork GAA, we will be returning to the table and looking for more."
