Callaghan: Kildare "can still have a say"

Eamonn Callaghan insists Kildare can string together a trademark Qualifier run.

The Lilywhites' stock is low following Sunday's Leinster SFC semi-final defeat to Meath and a draw away to Down in the second round of the Qualifiers was hardly what the doctor ordered.

But Kildare developed a reputation as back-door specialists under Kieran McGeeney (winning 16 of 17 Qualifier outings) and their captain sees no reason why they can't go on a run again this summer:

"Of course we can still have a say," the Naas clubman states in The Irish Daily Mirror. "We were beaten in the first round of Leinster in 2010 and we got back to an All-Ireland semi-final.

"The following year we went out of Leinster in the semi-finals, the same as now, and we got back to an All-Ireland quarter-final.

"We have the squad here, we have the players. I think a run in the Qualifiers is definitely achievable for us.

"We have to keep it in the back of our minds that the season isn't over. We still have a lot to play for. In three games' time, we could be back in an All-Ireland quarter-final and that's what we have to focus on.

"It's something we've done in the past and we just need to get our heads around it. We're out in less than two weeks and we just need to make sure that we don't let what happened against Meath happen again."
