Leinster Council chief Michael Delaney says he didn't authorise Kildare club Sarsfields to host a recent Manchester United Legends match.

The Newbridge-based GAA club hosted the fundraiser between a Man U 'Legends' XI - including former Republic of Ireland striker Frank Stapleton - and Newbridge Town last weekend.

Sarsfields agreed to stage the game on behalf of the local soccer club and Sars chairman John Holden told The Kildare Nationalist that clearance from Leinster Council had been secured through Kildare secretary Kathleen O'Neill.

However, provincial chief executive Delaney says this is all news to him and that he didn't sign off on the game taking place:

"I'm a United fan, but not even I could bend the rules for them. It's the first I heard of it," he is quoted in The Irish Independent.

If no permission was granted, then the match would contravene GAA rules which preclude clubs from renting their property to other sporting organisations for "field games other than those sanctioned by Central Council."
