Defender Conor Garvey is putting a nightmare 2013 behind him by playing a starring role in Down's push for promotion to Division 1.

The Mayobridge clubman missed out on last year's Ulster SFC after injuring his eye in a work-related accident.

Garvey and Down make the trip to Pairc Tailteann to take on Meath on Saturday evening and he will be hoping to continue the fine form which saw him kick two points in the round 5 victory over Donegal.

"We know what we have to do," Garvey stated in an interview with the Belfast Telegraph.

"We can't afford to lose ground. The promotion race is very tight, but we want to get into Division One if we can."

Down PRO Paul Rooney underlined Garvey's importance to the Mourne County cause.

"It's tremendous to see Conor Garvey back in there and showing his best form.

"He has given great service to the county since he first came into the side. He is a real battler, a player who never knows when he is beaten.

"Conor, indeed, has proven an inspiration to all of us by the defiant manner in which he has recovered from such a devastating injury to resume his career at the highest level."
