A novel game was held at Kildare GAA club Sarsfields' pitch last weekend as a Manchester United legends selection took on Newbridge FC in a fundraising soccer match.

Now many clubs can lay claim that the likes of former Republic of Ireland international Frank Stapleton, Keith Gillespie, Lee Martin and Clayton Blackmore strutted their stuff on their GAA pitch.

But that is what exactly happened last weekend when the Sarsfields GAA club hosted the novel match at their grounds, after they had received the relevant permission.

The fundraiser was in aid of Newbridge FC and Sarsfields GAA chairman John Holden told the Kildare Nationalist that they were only too delighted to host the game.

"We contacted Kathleen O'Neill (Kildare secretary) and got clearance from the Leinster Council. There were a few issues against us. The soccer players had to organise their own insurance because it is only GAA games that we are covered for here but that was organised by Teddy Stokes and the committee of Newbridge FC. I don't think the county board or anybody like that had any problems with the game going ahead.

"We jumped at the opportunity. It's a unique occasion; it was very well organised and very much appreciated that the soccer crowd had no problem in coming out to one of the leading GAA clubs in the county."
