FL3: Longford are Dunne and dusted

March 16, 2014

Cavan's Martin Dunne
Cavan 1-9
Longford 0-10

Cavan secured promotion from Division 3 when Martin Dunne's second half penalty gave them the local bragging rights over Longford at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.

Both teams finished the game with 14 players as the Ulster men made it five wins from five. Sean McCormack top-scored with 0-8 from frees, but still finished on the losing side.

Four McCormack frees and points from play by Brian Kavanagh and Mickey Quinn had the home side 0-6 to 0-4 at the break, with Kevin Tierney (two), Niall McDermott and Gearoid McKiernan replying for the Breffnimen.

On the restart, Martin Reilly left the minimum in it before Cavan's Turlough Mooney was dismissed on a second yellow card. But showing the character which had seen them come from behind to beat Sligo last weekend, Dunne tucked away a penalty to propel the visitors into a 1-5 to 0-6 lead and then Longford were also reduced to 14 men when wing back Colm P Smith received a straight red for a high tackle on Reilly.

Two further points from Dunne (one free) and efforts from Cian Mackey and McDermott saw Cavan win out, despite four more McCormack frees for Jack Sheedy's side.
