Donnelly: alcohol "a serious issue"

Tyrone minor manager Mickey Donnelly says the GAA must do more to highlight the blight of alcohol abuse.

The GAA voted at Congress to outlaw the sponsorship of underage teams by alcohol-related companies and Donnelly sees this as the first step down a long road:

"Maybe it is window-dressing but even if it's only lip service at this stage, it's a first introductory step," he notes in The Irish News.

"Alcohol is a serious issue. It's so accessible now. Eighteen is the new 21. Society is so far advanced now and lads are grown up before their time.

"Across the board at county level and club level, we have to do something to tackle it because there's alcohol dependency, there's solvent abuse...

"That's where clubs have to take the bull by the horns and try and manage things at micro level. I've seen U14 and U16 teams running about with such-and-such bar across the front of their jersey ... it's not right."
