The All-Ireland hurling championship grossed more income than its football equivalent for the first time last year.

Accounts published by the GAA yesterday revealed that hurling gate receipts amounted to €12 million, marginally ahead of football's €11.9 million. This can be attributed to the All-Ireland hurling final going to a replay, although that also happened in 2013 and football receipts remained greater by €10.9 million compared to €10.6 million.

In overall figures, there was a 10 per cent increase in attendance of All-Ireland senior football games, the average rising from 2012's figure of 14,606, to 15,996 in 2013.

The total revenue year on year also went up from €52.8 million in 2012 to €54.6 million last year, a growth rate of 3 per cent. Interestingly, which the Allianz Football League enjoyed record attendances, the figures for the Allianz Hurling League fell.

However, hurling fans turned out in their droves for what was widely regarded as the best hurling championship ever.
