Mayo manager James Horan was amazed that 19-points separated his side and Galway following their Connacht SFC meeting at Pearse Stadium this afternoon.
Not since 1907 had a Mayo team beaten the Tribesmen by such a margin in the Senior Football Championship, but it happened today in Salthill.
Horan stating that his side were confident coming into this game, but not expecting to win by such a margin.
"We were confident coming up here today," he said.
"We were doing a lot of things right and we were confident coming up. We were favourites going into Galway's back yard.
"We knew that if we played the way we could we were confident of the win, but obviously the margin of the win is something that you don't plan for. You take it when you get it.
"What set it up for us was the turnovers in the first half. Our forwards were just absolutely pinning them back and it broke their spirit a little bit.
"When Cathal Carolan got the goal we knew we were in the ascendancy. We drove on in the first half, took our foot of the pedal a little bit in the second half, but when Galway had a guy sent off the game sort of petered out a little bit.
"Our application in the first half when it needed to be good was exemplary today."
