James Horan says his Mayo team will need to step it up after their 3-14 to 1-12 victory over Fermanagh in Saturday night's game in aid of toddler Sam Bradley, who has a rare form of cancer.

Horan fielded a strong team for the Brewster Park SF challenge which the visitors controlled throughout. Donal Vaughan's 25th minute goal helped them to a 1-10 to 0-5 interval lead, and the game was ended as a contest when Alan Freeman netted two minutes after the restart.

Daniel Kille pulled back a goal from a penalty for the Erne County before Alan Murphy grabbed a third major for the Connacht champions late on.

Mayo will begin their provincial defence against Galway in Salthill on May 19, and Horan admitted the need for improvement.

"We got a little bit lazy. We were 2-10 to 0-5 up and Fermanagh got 1-5 to our 0-2 and we just stopped doing what we should be doing," he said in the Irish Daily Star.

"We were missing tackles and we made a lot of changes, but that's not the reason we lost focus."
