McGuinness: Relegation not the end of the world

Jim McGuinness won't lose any sleep over Donegal's relegation from Division 1.

Paul Mannion's late equalising point for Dublin in Ballybofey, coupled with wins for Kerry and Mayo, sent the All-Ireland champions through the relegation trapdoor but their manager wasn't overly concerned.

"It's not the end of the world," McGuinness told The Irish Independent. "It doesn't make a difference to us because we don't really like the league to be honest with you."

Donegal commenced preparations for their eagerly-awaited Ulster SFC clash with Tyrone last Tuesday night and a heavy training schedule may have played a part in their failure to secure all two points.

Colm McFadden, for instance, was withdrawn at half-time as he was suffering from 'cramp' according to the manager.

He added: "We'll rebuild in Division 2, not that we'd be rebuilding, but it'll be easier on us in terms of the opposition that we'll be playing.

"It'll give us a chance to roll out our annual plan a lot easier than it was this year and last year.

"I have no problem with that and we have no problem with being relegated."

McGuinness did, however, admit that his players were 'shell-shocked' with how events unfolded in Ballybofey but refused to comment on the display of replacement referee Michael Duffy who ignored claims for a Donegal penalty after Rory Kavanagh was fouled in the 60th minute.

"You saw the game. You can report on it how you see fit," was all he would say.
