Members of the Kilkenny senior hurling squad will be special guests of FAI chief executive John Delaney at tomorrow night's World Cup qualifier against Austria at the Aviva Stadium.

Mr Delaney was pictured with the Liam McCarthy Cup last month and promised Paul Murphy, Tommy Walsh and captain Eoin Larkin tickets for a game.

"It was a personal invite," an FAI spokesperson explained to the Irish Independent.

"They wanted John to come down and take a picture with the McCarthy Cup.

"It was just the three of them at first but it grew from there."

It is understood that 17 members of the squad have been invited to attend the game by the FAI chief who played hurling for Arravale Rovers when at school in Abbey CBS.
