Long-serving Limerick hurling star Brian Geary has announced his inter-county retirement.

The Monaleen colossus' announcement comes just a few weeks after he was named in Limerick manager John Allen's 40-man training panel. Geary made 45 championship appearances - three short of Mark Foley's record - in a senior inter-county career that spanned three decades.

He made his championship debut against Cork in 1999 and soon established himself as one of the top centre backs in the game, wearing the number six jersey in the Treaty County's 2007 All-Ireland final defeat to Kilkenny. He was deployed as a forward in more recent times and started three of this year's championship games at centre forward.

A player who has suffered his fair share of injuries down the years, Geary won an All-Ireland U21HC medal in 2000 and also played in that year's All-Ireland U21FC final defeat to Tyrone. He enjoyed plenty of success on the football fields, winning four Limerick SFC medals with Monaleen in 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2011.

Confirming Geary's retirement this morning, Limerick secretary Mike O'Riordan said: "Brian Geary has announced his retirement from inter county activity. On behalf of Limerick GAA, we wish him all the best for the future."
