A Kildare club footballer has won his first championship medal at 52.

Not only did Liam Miley line out for St Laurence's in the Reserve C final against Sarsfields last weekend, but the corner forward kicked five points including the match winner.

In what is a remarkable achievement, the 52-year-old who line out in the 1982 senior football championship final against last weekend's opponents.

Another twist to the tale is that Miley lined up against the late Christy Sweeney in the '82 decider, while last Saturday he faced up against the late Christy's son, Cian.

St Laurence's won the game by a solitary point, 1-12 to 1-11 and the former county player had the final say in what was an outstanding performance.
