Eoin Kelly is facing a race against time to be fit for Waterford's Munster SHC semi-final against Clare on June 17 after suffering a suspected broken thumb during a weekend club game.
The former All Star, who was left off the Waterford panel at the start of the year only to be brought back into the fold by manager Michael Ryan, suffered the injury while playing for Passage East in their 2-13 to 2-17 defeat to Abbeyside at Walsh Park on Saturday. Kelly is currently in plaster, but won't know the extent of the injury until bruising and swelling in his hand has subsided.
If a break is confirmed, he is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks, which would make him a major doubt for the Clare game in Thurles. Waterford are already planning for the championship without another key forward, Pauric Mahony, who underwent groin surgery recently, but Richie Foley and Wayne Hutchinson are both on course to feature against the Banner after lining out for the clubs over the past two weekends.
