A first half goal from Mayo star Jason Doherty helped NUIG to a five-point victory over Sligo in last night's FBD Connacht League opener at a wind-swept Centre of Excellence in Ballyhaunis.

The conditions made life extremely difficult for both teams, but the Galway students seemed to cope better and deserve credit for holding Sligo to just two second half points, despite playing into the teeth of the gale. Kevin Walsh's side led by 0-2 to 0-1 early on thanks to points from Stephen Coen and Pat Hughes after Neil Douglas had opened NUIG's account, but the students hit back with an unanswered 1-2 to take a 1-3 to 0-2 lead into the break.

Sligo looked to capable of overturning the deficit when Stephen Kilcoyne and Coen grabbed the first two scores of the second half, but they failed to score again as NUIG closed out the game with points from Doherty, Stephen Guing and Douglas against the wind.
