Dublin's Brennan prays for opponents

Dublin's Ger Brennan
Ger Brennan always prays before games for the safety of his team-mates and opponents.

Dublin's All-Ireland winning centre back plays with his heart on his sleeve and has had more than his share of run-ins with match officials over the years, but he's a deeply spiritual person who prays regularly and takes his faith extremely seriously.

In a remarkable interview that didn't make the final cut for the best-selling Dubs DVD 'Sam 2011' but is disclosed in today's Daily Star, Brennan revealed: "Certainly in my life my faith is extremely important.

"I went to a Jesuit school, Belvedere College. Part of Ignatian spirituality is for the greater glory of God, so all that you do, you do it for the greater glory of God.

"So, whatever you are doing, you are trying to be the best that you can and trying to make the most of your gifts.

"While other people may listen to music or shout or bang the walls, I sit in the corner and have a quick prayer.

"I always say 'God, thanks for my talents and thanks for having so many great people around me who have helped me get to this place'.

"And I would always pray for the safety of my own team-mates and the other team, and then just go out and enjoy it.

"And I know no matter what happens, there is a bigger picture in the grandeur of God and human people and creation.

"I always have that sense of God in my life no matter what I am doing. I can be quite chilled and quite peaceful off the pitch."
