Brogan pledges Twitter caution

Dublin's 2010 Footballer of the Year, Bernard Brogan
Dublin's Footballer of the Year Bernard Brogan admits caution is the order of the day when it comes to posting messages on his Twitter page.

Brogan, who tweets at @bernardbrogan, is the most high-profile GAA adopter of the social media phenomenon.

Others, such as Brogan's Dublin teammates Barry Cahill, Mossy Quinn and Eamonn Fennell and Kerry's Paul Galvin and Darran O'Sullivan, are also regular users of Twitter, while Armagh captain Stevie McDonnell is one of the latest GAA stars to get involved.

The rise in the growth of GAA players using social media has prompted the Association to ponder the implementation of usage guidelines - but Brogan insists that he has no plans of courting any controversy.

Speaking to TV3, he said, "You have to be aware. Obviously you've seen the likes of [former Liverpool soccer player] Ryan Babel who have been disciplined over stuff on Twitter so we just have to be smart about it. You don't say anything silly or anything like that.

"It's a bit of fun; you have to keep it light hearted and not try to be too profound on it because it will be picked up and things can be splashed on a newspaper and taken up wrongly. Us Dublin lads we've been smart enough so far so hopefully we can continue that way."

Check out the full interview with Bernard Brogan on 3e's FYI show from 6pm this evening (Thursday).

Meanwhile, Hogan Stand has compiled a list of GAA players on Twitter, which you can view and follow at this link.
