"Swine flu" forces Mayo side to withdraw

February 11, 2011
The Mayo school who pulled out of the Connacht senior colleges semi-final earlier this week were unable to field a team because of swine flu.

St Muredach's College from Ballina had been due to take on crack Tuam outfit St Jarlath's in the semis earlier this week.

However, they were forced to withdraw from the competition because they couldn't field a senior line-up.

Manager Robbie Reynolds told the Irish Examiner, "Between swine flu and injuries we couldn't field a team. It is the first time it has ever happened us and is very tough on the lads.

"We have around 10 or 12 lads from the first team missing. We have a lot of young lads anyway, but we still couldn't field a team of juveniles in a senior competition."

Jarlath's will face Summerhill in the Connacht final.
