O'Byrne Cup: Glennon goal sinks DIT
January 16, 2011
Westmeath 1-9
DIT 0-8
A first-half goal from David Glennon proved crucial as Westmeath booked their place into the last four of the O'Byrne Cup at DIT's expense in Athlone today.
The hosts were trailing by a point when referee Derek Fahy awarded the penalty for a foul on Paul Sharry inside the square coming up to the second quarter, which was saved by DIT goalkeeper David Lyons. The spot-kick had to be retaken though after Fahy adjudged Lyons to have advanced from his line before the ball was struck, and at the second attempt Glennon made no mistake.
The goal saw Westmeath edge a 1-3 to 0-5 lead at half-time, with their opponents firing over scores down the other end through Diarmuid Connolly, Gareth Bradshaw and David Hughes.
However, the Dublin students failed to draw level in the second-half as substitute Dessie Dolan stretched the Lake men's advantage with three points from open play and not even a late sending off for Simon Quinn for a second caution could disrupt the home side's march to the semis, where they face Kildare next Sunday.
