O'Byrne Cup: Late UCD goal downs Meath

January 11, 2011

UCD's Josh Hayes gets to the ball before Meath's Paddy Gilsenan during the O'Byrne Cup match at Pairc Tailteann.
UCD 1-9
Meath 0-10

An injury time goal from UCD corner back Josh Hayes saw Seamus McEnaney's first game in charge of Meath end in disappointment.

The game in Pairc Tailteann wasn't exactly one to set the pulses racing but their was a sting in the tail at the end for the home fans.

Points from Paddy Gilsenan, Cormac McGuinness and Niall Mooney had Meath 0-3 to no score ahead

The college soon levelled matters and John Heslin, who tormented Meath at U21 level last year in the colours of Westmeath, soon put them ahead with a free.

Graham Reilly levelled but Heslin left UCD 0-5 to 0-4 ahead at the break.

Three quick score from Cian Ward (2) and Reilly put Meath in a strong position but UCD had plenty of fight in them at the game was level at 0-9 apiece as the game entered injury time.

A Shane McAnerney point seemed to have won in for Meath but Hayes then grabbed the latest of winners with his dramatic goal.
