Refs' chief against video technology

Mick Curley Chairman of the National Referee's Committee
Referees' chief Mick Curley has underlined his stance against video technology being introduced into Gaelic games after more controversy at Croke Park last weekend.

After Sunday's All-Ireland SFC semi-final, Benny Coulter admitted that he was in the square when he fisted the Down goal that had a major bearing on the game as Kildare went on to lose by two points.

Curley admitted in today's Irish Examiner that the goal shouldn't have stood, but also claimed that the match officials were correct to rule out Alan Smith's effort at a point.

"In my opinion the ball was over the post. The ruling is that it has to be inside the post for the score to be deemed a point. I feel that the lads made the correct call there.

But he added: "But I was watching it on television, and there was nothing conclusive from the replays.

"That proves the point that I have been making for a long time. It was the same late in the second-half when Kildare were appealing for a penalty after claiming one of the Down players had touched the ball on the ground.

"The incident was shown a number of times from a variety of different angles and slowed down. But again it was inconclusive. It proves again that the arguments about video technology are not as clear cut as people think."
