O'Reilly receives baptism of fire on AFL debut
August 16, 2010
Down's Jamie O'Reilly
Jamie O'Reilly's AFL debut for Richmond on Saturday ended in a crushing 156-67 defeat to the Carlton Blues.
The former Down underage star's family flew out to Melbourne to see his Premiership debut, but before an attendance of 44,716 at the MCG, it proved to be a humbling experience for the Loughinisland lad who was helpless to prevent Carlton from dishing out an 89-point hammering.
Despite being part of a defence which was consistently cut to pieces by the Carlton attack, O'Reilly acquitted himself well, reaching double figures in disposables and taking five marks.
Once again, Cork's Setanta O hAilpin was missing from the Carlton attack and instead lined out for the Blues' second string - the Bullants - against the Casey Scorpions. Despite kicking five goals for a 30-point total, O hAilpin and his Laois colleague Zach Tuohy finished on the wrong end of a 79-66 defeat.
Meanwhile, Mayo's Pearce Hanley was on the scoresheet again for the Brisbane Lions in their narrow 97-104 loss to the Adelaide Crows, while Tadhg Kennelly impressed in the Sydney Swans' win over Fremantle in Perth.
