TG4 Ladies Senior Football Championship Previews

30 July 2010

The first round of the Qualifiers in the TG4 Ladies Football Senior Championship takes place this weekend.

Saturday 31st July 2010

TG4 Senior Championship - Round 1 Qualifier (extra time will be played if necessary)
Down v Kildare, Fingallians (Dublin), 7.30, (K. Tighe)
These two teams locked horns earlier in the year in Division 2 of the Bord Gáis Energy National League with Kildare coming out top that day, winning by 2-4 to 3-14. Indeed Kildare went on to contest the League Final so have had a decent year already with captain Aisling Holton in fine form. Down's form in the Ulster championship does not indicate much has changed in their fortunes so a Kildare win here.

Sunday 1st August 2010

TG4 Senior Championship - Round 1 Qualifier (extra time will be played if necessary)
Tyrone v Leitrim, Shannon Gaels (Cavan), 2.30, (P. Swift)
Tyrone have suffered mixed fortunes this year with good results followed by bad in Division 1 of the League and a similar problem affecting their Ulster campaign. Leitrim have had a much more positive year winning Division 4 of the League and with Aine Tighe and Evie Guckian playing very well, it could swing their way. But the extra experience of playing Division 1 football could prove decisive for the O'Neill County.

Monday 2nd August 2010

TG4 Senior Championship - Round 1 Qualifiers (both games live on TG4 and extra time will be played if necessary)
Kerry v Mayo, Banagher (Offaly), 2.30, (K. Delahunty)
All eyes will be on Mayo here and that will suit the Kingdom down to the ground! It's been just over two weeks since Fr. Michael Murphy took over as manager of the Mayo team but is that enough time to prepare a team for championship action? For Kerry it is an equally tricky encounter as it is hard to know what to expect from Mayo - but they can expect a team fired up and determined to prove the doubters wrong.

Tipperary v Meath, Banagher (Offaly), 4.15, (D. McEnery)
Neither of these two teams advanced further than the Qualifiers last year with Tipperary exiting meekly at the hands of Laois in Round 1, while Meath made it to Round 2 but Kerry put them to the sword. Both counties would have been hoping to go on a bit of a run this year but the fixtures have conspired against them. They played out a highly entertaining and high scoring game in Division 2 earlier on this year and another open game is on the cards. Meath to win, just.
