Munster club involvement may scupper pair's move
October 03, 2009
Kerins O'Rahilly's possible involvement in this year's Munster club football championship could scupper Tommy Walsh and David Moran's proposed AFL switch.
The Strand Road club have already been knocked out of the Kerry county championship, but they could yet qualify to represent the Kingdom in the provincial championship. They face Ardfert in the county's separate club championship final on Sunday week and are favourites to win.
Should they emerge victorious, and a divisional side wins the county championship - as regularly happens in Kerry - Kerins O'Rahilly's would represent the Kingdom in the race for the Munster club title. The Kerry representatives will have home advantage against Cork champions Clonakilty in the opening round on November 8.
Walsh and Moran are due to fly out to Australia next month where are expected to sign international rookie contracts with St. Kilda, but in the event of O'Rahilly's being involved in the Munster championship, they may not be able to do so.
Ironically, the pair missed last year's international rookie deadline after the Kerry SFC final between O' Rahilly's and Mid-Kerry went to a replay. However, Walsh still travelled Down Under where he held trials with this year's beaten Grand Finalists in the lead-up to Christmas.
Kerry selector Ger O'Keeffe admitted that speculation has increased regarding the talented pair's future.
"There are a lot of rumours going around and I presume that's because St Kilda are believed to have made an offer to Tommy (Walsh) last year," he said.
"To the best of my knowledge, Tommy has not made any decision about his future."
