Shock winners over Nemo Rangers last time out, Dromcollogher-Broadford completed a fairytale year at the Gaelic Grounds when edging out Kilmurry-Ibrickane to claim their first Munster club football title. Drom-Broadford.....0-6 Kilmurry-Ibrickane....0-5 The Limerick champions, who only entered the senior ranks eight years ago, survived a late charge from their Clare counterparts to spark unbridled scenes of joy among their supporters in the 3,214 attendance. Despite signalling just one minute of injury-time, referee Aidan Mangan played four, during which Drom-Broadford snatched the winner through corner back Declan Callinan and survived some hairy moments to hold on for a famous victory. 2004 champions Kilmurry-Ibrickane were not helped by the dismissal of captain Shane Hickey for a second bookable offence with two extra minutes played, or by their tally of nine wides, compared to just one from the winners. They could have snatched a draw at the death, but substitute Mark McCarthy's free close to the Mackey Stand drifted wide, and was followed by the full time whistle. Kilmurry's first half wastefulness allowed Drom-Broadford to go into the break level on 0-3 apiece, and they pushed on from there to become the first Limerick team since Thomond College in 1977 to capture the Munster title. As the scoreline suggests, scores were at a premium with seven of the 11 scores registered coming from placed balls. Indeed, Derry McCarthy's effort for the winners after 31 minutes was the only score from play during the first half. The second half was a much livelier affair with an excellent point from county star Seanie Buckley and a second Pat Donnelly free pushing Drom-Broadford into a 0-5 to 0-3 lead. Kilmurry-Ibrickane had to wait until 12 minutes from the end for Odhran O'Dwyer to open their second half account before Michael Reidy restored the winners' two-point lead with three minutes of normal time remaining. But in a tension-filled finale, Drom-Broadford did just enough to hold on for the win. Tweet
