Scotland claim shinty honours

Scotland 1-10
Ireland 1-9
Scotland captured their fourth hurling/shinty international title on the trot Saturday at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny.
A 49th minute goal from John Stewart proved the difference for the Scots as they edged the hosts by a single point to clinch the title.
The visitors opened the scoring through points from Hector Whitelaw and John Stewart to establish an early lead.
Both Seán Óg Ó hAilpín and Eddie Brennan were outstanding for the Irish but it took them 20 minutes to get off the mark through a Brendan McGourty point, after shoting seven efforts the wrong side of the posts.
Brennan added a brace of points thereafter, which was backed up by fellow Kilkenny man Derek Lyng to send the hosts two in front before Whitelaw levelled the game with a puck from the ground.
Lyng put Ireland's noses back in front, but a well struck effort from Brendan Murtagh that sailed between the posts and another Whitelaw free had Scotland going in at the interval 0-8 to 0-7 ahead.
A quick point from Murtagh at the restart was met with the game's first goal from John Stewart to open up a three-point advantage for the eventual winners after netting the rebound of Whitelaw's initial effort with power.
Substitute Eddie Tembo stretched Scotland's lead to four before extra-time where Brendan Murtagh's penalty still couldn't prove enough for Lester Ryan's side.
