Heavy sanctions for Derry clubs

October 09, 2008
Record suspensions and fines have been proposed for Slaughtneil and Ballinderry following a series of incidents in last Sunday's Derry SFC final. Slaughtneil, who lost the Celtic Park final by 0-8 to 0-10, have been banned from all competitions for six months, while 96-week bans have been handed out to club members Raymond McCluskey and Danny McMullan. Francis McEldowney, Fergal McEldowney, Michael McEldowney and Michael Rogers, also of Slaughtneil, have been hit with 48-week bans. Ballinderry selector Paul Devlin has been banned for two years, while Slaughtneil have also been fined £5,000. County board investigations are ongoing and it's understood that Ballinderry could receive a similar fine, while further players and club officials are facing suspensions. Slaughtneil have been banned from all adult activity at senior, reserve and under-21 level for six months. The club will also have to play all adult games next year away from home. Underage football and the club's hurling teams are not affected. Both clubs have 72 hours to appeal the sanctions and, in the meantime, the county board has declined to comment on the matter. It is alleged that two press photographers were the verbally and physically abused following unsavoury scenes after the final whistle.
