Monaghan put their name into the hat for Monday morning’s All-Ireland senior football championship third round draw by defeating Roscommon on a 1-20 to 0-14 scoreline in Clones.

Stephen Mooney’s goal on the half-hour mark proved crucial for the hosts as it steered them into a lead they’d never relinquish, winning out by nine points in the end to bring the curtain down on the Connacht champions’ season.

The visitors got out to a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after 22 minutes with the help of a brace of Diarmuid Murtagh points and hat-trick from Daire Cregg.

Jack McCarron sent over a two-pointer from the Farney men and he’d lad another point ahead of Conor McCarthy levelling and Mooney rolling in a low finish past Charlie Carroll.

Another McCarron effort from beyond the arc left it at 1-9 to 0-7 for the interval and Gabriel Bannigan’s men pushed further clear in the closing quarter with more white flags via Dessie Ward, McCarthy and McCarron

Cian McKeon and Conor Hand pulled points for Mark Down’s men, but McCarron (free), David Garland and Ryan McAnespie hit unanswered scores at the other end to seal Monaghan’s progress to the next round.
