Athy tore up the script at Cedral St Conleth’s Park this afternoon to deny Naas in their five-in-a-row bid and claim their first Kildare senior football championship title in five years.

Barry Kelly’s goal was key in a 1-17 to 0-18 victory for Athy as they delivered their club’s eighth Dermot Bourke Cup success with a superb display in Newbridge.

Kelly’s strike came in the 24th minute, trimming his side’s deficit to the minimum, and they’d ride their momentum for the remainder of the first-half to hit scores via Cathal McCarron and Niall Kelly to lead by 1-7 to 0-9 at the break.

The holders levelled matters within three minutes of the resumption and went ahead again through Alex Beirne in the 34th minute, Athy posted the next six scores without response to take control as this decider moved into its closing quarter.

A Beirne two-pointer from a free was sorely needed by Naas and they’d get within a goal with four minutes left in normal tome thanks to Ryan Sinkey’s point.

Brian Maher sailed over the response for Athy and the same player would cancel out Beirne (free) injury as Geraldine Park men held on for a famous two-point victory.
