Waterford started their Munster senior hurling championship campaign in winning fashion this afternoon by seeing off Cork on a 2-25 to 1-25 scoreline at Walsh Park.

Jamie Barron’s goal in the opening minute set the tone for the Deise men as they went on to build a seven-point advantage before the visitors got their arrears down to four (1-11 to 0-10) come half-time.

Mark Coleman, Shane Barrett and Darragh Fitzgibbon sailed over the first three points of the restart to trim the Rebels’ deficit down to the minimum ahead of Jamie Barron steadying the home side’s ship.

The Leesiders would get the game level thanks to brace of Patrick Horgan frees but Waterford found another goal at a crucial point – this time from the penalty spot where Stephen Bennett tucked away the slitoar with expertise.

From there, Davy Fitzgerald’s side were able to push five clear and, despite Alan Connolly hitting their net late on, they are able to see out an important first win in the Munster SHC race.
