Wexford and Limerick have found out who they will begin the defence of their respective provincial titles against after the draws for the reverted 2020 Leinster and Munster senior hurling championships were completed this evening.
The GAA have decided to scrap the round-robin group format for the provincial championships this year due to time contraints caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but instead they will now be played on a straight knockout basis with games to be finished on the day.
Action will get underway in the provinces on October 24/25 when the quarter-finals are played with the semi-finals fixed for October 31/November 1 and there is a two-week break to the finals on November 14/15.
Davy Fitzgerald's Wexford will begin the defence of their Leinster crown against Galway in the semi-final as Kilkenny await the winners of the quarter-final clash between Laois and Dublin.
In Munster, neighbours Clare and Limerick will renew their rivalry and the prize for the victors is a semi-final meeting with All-Ireland champions Tipperary. On the other side, Cork will meet Waterford for a place in the decider.
Six beaten provincial quarter-finalists or semi-finalists will contest the qualifiers with two Leinster teams paired against two Munster teams in round 1. The two remaining beaten provincial quarter-finalists or semi-finalists will face the two round 1 winners in round 2. Then, the two round 2 winners will meet the two beaten provincial finalists in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
There wil be no second chance for the provincial winners as they progress into the All-Ireland semi-finals as normal.
