Murdered Detective Garda Colm Horkan was a member of a Mayo family steeped in GAA tradition.
Colm lost his life following a shooting incident while on duty in Castlerea, Co Roscommon last night. A former player with his native Charlestown GAA club, he was affectionately known as 'The Bear' to his teammates and represented the county at U21 level.
The Horkan family have been heavily involved in Charlestown GAA for many generations. Colm's mother Dolores, who passed away suddenly in 2001, was a huge supporter of the Sarsfields.
Only last year the club launched the Dolores Horkan Memorial Minor Football Tournament. Colm had the honour of presenting the cup named after his late mother to the winning team.
Our GAA community & beyond are absolutely heartbroken to tragically lose our friend and brother Colm, an incredibly loved & respected man in our community. RIP https://t.co/1OfTeiGFUr
