David Clifford is the new Kerry senior football captain.

Clifford, who will celebrate his 21st birthday on Wednesday, has been nominated by county champions East Kerry. Jack Sherwood and Dara Moynihan were the only other players in the running for the role.

The Fossa forward is expected to skipper the Kingdom for the first time in Saturday's Allianz Football League opener against Dublin at Croke Park. He could be the last Kerry captain to be nominated by the county champions after the Beaufort club recently put forward a motion to change the rule.
