Westmeath manager Shane O’Brien admits that sickness and injury have hampered their preparations over the Christmas period.

The Lake County are back in action this weekend when they take on Laois in the Walsh Cup on Sunday afternoon.

However, O’Brien revealed to the Westmeath Examiner that it has been a tough period dealing with both illness and injury.

“We have a lot of injury and sickness at the moment, to be honest. Over the Christmas we have five lads with different types of bugs,” said O’Brien.

“Killian Doyle, Tommy Gallagher and Conor Kane are all recovering from surgery. We’re looking forward to seeing these lads back in action over the coming weeks.

“It is probably being overly optimistic to think that we might have a full panel to pick from at the start of the league. It is part and parcel of any team throughout the country that they will pick up injuries.”
