Westmeath came good in the second-half to bag the points that were up for grabs in today's O’Byrne Cup encounter with Wexford at Enniscorthy.

Paul Galvin’s first game in charge of the Model County resulted in a 0-11 to 1-11 defeat.

The home side shaded the first-half exchanges and, despite conceding a 14th minute goal to Joe Halligan, took a 0-9 to 1-4 advantage into the break.

However, the Lake County gained control of the contest thanks to five points without reply after the restart.

Conor McCormack (2), Callum McCormack, Lorcan Dolan and Kieran Martin were all on target for Jack Cooney’s team during that purple patch.

At the other end of the field, the team in maroon and white restricted their hosts to just two second-half points.

Late scores from Dolan and Stephen Connolly wrapped up the win for Westmeath who have a home game against Meath to look forward to in round 2.

Wexford, meanwhile, will entertain Laois in Enniscorthy.
