Galway GAA is in mourning following the death of PJ Qualter, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 76.
PJ was a member of the Tribesmen’s 1975 National Hurling League winning team and was also on the side which lost out to Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final later that year.
He scored goals in both deciders, with the 4-9 to 4-6 win in the league final over Tipperary at Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds bringing a first piece of hurling silverware back to Galway in two decades.
A native of Turloughmore, with whom he won six county titles, PJ retired by the time Galway triumphed to the Liam MacCarthy Cup in 1980 and had been considered as one of the key elements in a breakthrough for the county that saw them go on to capture three All-Ireland crowns that decade.
Coaching became his passion after retirement from playing while his son Seamus would go on to have successful terms as manager of both Westmeath and Roscommon.
Predeceased by his wife Betty and daughter Deirdre, brothers James and Billy and sisters Nonie, Mary and Winnie, PJ will be sadly missed by his three sons Paul, Seamus and Padraig.
