Former Dublin county board chairman John Bailey

Former Dublin county board chairman John Bailey has died at the age of 74 after a long illness.

The Cuala clubman enjoyed two stints as chairman of Dublin county board, from 1993 until 1998 and again between 2001 and 2006.

A larger than life figure, John was equally at home in the world of politics. Last May he was elected as a Fine Gael Councillor for Dun Laoghaire, a position he first obtained ( and held ever since) in 2004. He also contested the Dail elections of 2002 and 2007.

A man of many positions within Dublin GAA, John was heavily involved with the re development of Parnell Park. A very competent referee, he took charge of the 1986 All Ireland hurling final where Cork saw off the challenge of an emerging  Galway.

John Bailey was the father of present Fine Gael TD, Maria Bailey.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
