Player scores 'own point' in Westmeath hurling league final

There was a bizarre incident in the opening minute of yesterday's Westmeath All-County Hurling League Division 1 final between Clonkill and Lough Lene Gaels at TEG Cusack Park.

Former county player Niall 'Nipper' Dowdall either forgot or wasn't aware of which way his Clonkill team were playing when he sent the opening score over his own crossbar from 60 yards.

Fortunately for 'Nipper', his 'own point' didn't have a bearing on the outcome as Clonkill went on to win the game by 2-17 to 2-11.
