Canning nears Galway return

Galway's Joe Canning congratulates Joe Cooney after the win over Kilkenny in Nolan Park

Joe Canning's return to training gave Galway a major lift ahead of yesterday's thrilling Leinster SHC victory over Kilkenny, according to Micheal Donoghue.

Canning, who underwent knee surgery two months ago, could return for the Leinster final if the Tribesmen beat Dublin in their final round-robin game at Parnell Park next Saturday.

"Joe is back in the collective training and he has hit all his markers, so we will just see how it goes," the Galway manager explained.

"Today's game was about the collective today and that's the thing. But in fairness to Joe, he is back in training and he has given a massive, massive lift to training and this is a big week for him."

Donoghue indicated that Galway would be appealing the straight red card issued to John Hanbury for a high challenge on Ger Aylward.

"When the dust settles we'll probably reflect and see if there is anything we can do on them," he told RTÉ.

"The game was played in a really good spirit. It was high intensity, some great scores, and with that comes big hits. But I don't think there was anything too malicious in it."
