The late Mick Archer, who passed away on Sunday, won an All-Ireland SHC medal with Cork in 1966.
The Rebels had gone twelve years without an All-Ireland victory and were given no chance at the start of the '66 campaign, but they came from nowhere to win Munster (beating Clare, Limerick and Waterford) before defeating a fancied Kilkenny side in the decider.
That Cork team was captained to the Liam MacCarthy Cup by Mick’s St Finbarr’s clubmate Gerald McCarthy.
A brilliant dual player, Archer also represented his county in football at minor, U21 and senior levels, collecting provincial and All-Ireland minor medals in the big ball code in 1961. Mick lined out at full forward as Mayo were beaten in the All Ireland decider.
The Ballyphehane-born attacker also won three Cork SHC medals with the ‘Barrs, who added Munster titles on all three occasions (1965, 1968 and 1974).
Mick’s requiem mass takes place at the Church of the Assumption, Ballyphehane at 11:30am this morning, followed by burial afterwards in St. Finbarr’s Cemetery.
