Watch: is this what Gaelic football has become?

Slaughtneil midfielder Padraig Cassidy solos the ball at walking pace inside his own half during the Derry SFC clash against Magherafelt at Owenbeg.

Gaelic football is in a bad way judging by this footage from last night's Derry SFC first round clash between Slaughtneil and Magherafelt.

Shane Mulligan scored 0-5 as the Emmets opened their title defence with a 0-10 to 0-5 victory, but the main talking point afterwards was the bizarre sight of their midfielder Padraig Cassidy soloing the ball at walking pace for up to two minutes inside his own half with hardly a Magherafelt player in sight.

It seemed that Magherafelt were content to keep everyone inside their own half, despite a chorus of boos ringing around Owenbeg.

Magherafelt weren't breaking any rules, but surely something needs to be done to encourage teams to come out of their shell and give spectators their money's worth.
