Galway ace Meehan retires

Galway star Michael Meehan has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Caltra clubman revealed the news via his Twitter account tonight in a Christmas message to followers.

Considered by many to be one of Galway's greatest ever forwards, Meehan won three Connacht SFC titles with the Tribesmen in a career that was hampered by injury problems.

A true underage prodigy, he earned two All-Ireland U21 titles before making the breakthrough with Galway's seniors, debuting against Roscommon in the first round of the 2003 Connacht championship.

In 2014, his inter-county career was cut short by injuries but he was convinced by Tribe boss Kevin Walsh to make a return to the maroon jersey and came on as a substitute in this past July's All-Ireland SFC qualifier victory over Donegal.
