The chairman of Mayo club Hollymount/Carramore has slammed the efforts by others to establish a new GAA club in Hollymount.

An application has been forwarded to the Mayo County Board seeking to form a new GAA club in the village of Hollymount, which ironically comes just six years after they had amalgamated with Carramore to form one club.

Hollymount/Carramore chairman Frank Keane expressed his disbelief at such a move and the fact that the Mayo County Board would even consider allowing a new club to be formed.

Keane addressed a county board meeting and the Western People reported that he denied speculation that Hollymount/Carramore were about to disband.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," said Keane. "Since the formation of the club in 2011 it has gone from strength to strength. We progressed all the way to the All-Ireland club IFC final in Croke Park (2016) and it was an immensely proud day for the whole community.

"We went on to win Division 1A of the Mayo senior league the same year and were very unlucky not to get to a county senior championship semi-final this year. That, coupled with the success of our underage teams at all grades, only goes to rubber-stamp the decision to join forces in 2011."

The Western People reports that up to 23 people have signed an application for a new club that would be called St Coman's Hollymount.

The club were not allowed to play a senior football championship match at Hollymount's St Coman's Park this year, even though the club continues to pay the utility bills attached to the community pitch.
