Mayo star Lee Keegan has refuted rumours that he has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

The former Footballer of the Year is set to undergo rehab over the next few months to help correct a hip problem, which will see him missing a chunk of Mayo's National League campaign next season.

Some cruel gossip that the Westport man was suffering from MS - a long-lasting disease affecting approximately 8,000 people in Ireland - appeared online last week, causing major distress for his family.

However, speaking to Mike Finnerty of the Mayo News today, Keegan was able to address the unfounded rumours.  

"I definitely can confirm that I don't have MS, which is a very serious condition and something that really shouldn't be discussed in the manner that it has been," said the 28-year-old.

He added: "I'm 100 perfect fine and healthy, and thankfully have no illness like that. I was disappointed to see my family upset by the rumours and it's not nice for people who do have MS, for my name to be thrown around in conversations like that, with false rumours."
