Conway, Teddy

December 07, 2006
The late Teddy Conway Keady legend, Teddy Conway passed away very suddenly on 11th November 2006, aged just 71 years. Teddy was reared in Keady, and came from a family of three. His brother Petie lives in Mayo, and his late sister May passed away on the 23rd May 2005. They were the family of the late Andrew and Susan Conway. In the early 50s, Teddy worked at collecting eggs. In 1957, he went to England and worked there for two years. In 1960, he became a roofing contractor. Teddy was a keen and talented footballer. He played his football during the Keady Dwyer's golden years in the 1950s and won senior championship medals in 1953 and 1956. He was described as a 'freetaker of note'. He also played for his county. Teddy remained loyal and dedicated to the cause of Keady Dwyers. In 2004, Teddy received the Hall of Fame award from Keady Michael Dwyers. In 1999, he also received the Hall of Fame award from the Keady Road Bowls Club. This was another hobby he thoroughly enjoyed. In 1963, Teddy married his wife Ellen, originally from Gilford, Co Down. They set up their home in Gilford for six years. Then in 1969, they moved to Keady. They were blessed with four daughters - Annmarie, Michelle, Colette and Colleen - and three sons - Paul, Leo and Aiden. In 1983, Teddy suffered a severe stroke at the young age of 47. But he never gave up, he was a credit to himself and his family. He was devoted to his family and had a love for Gaelic games. This shone through his sons, daughters and grandchildren, whom he admired. On 4th November he travelled to Cavan to watch his daughters and grand-daughters play in an All-Ireland Semi-Final. They won and he was so proud. Teddy was known near and far, and the largely attended wake and funeral reflected his popularity. He will be sadly missed, especially by his family, relatives and friends. He will never be forgotten. Courtesy of The Armagh Observer 07 December 2006
